JID: A Forever Story in the Making

 JID | Spotify

JID is one of the most talented lyricists and rappers of this generation. Ever since his 2022 album The Forever Story dropped, I’ve been completely hooked. It’s genuinely one of my favorite albums of all time, a masterclass in storytelling, flow, and production. Every listen feels like I’m uncovering something new, and it never gets old.

When The Forever Story first dropped, I didn’t give the full album a chance. I only added "Stars" to my playlist. It wasn’t until early 2023, after hearing so many people rave about how it was one of the best albums of the year, that I decided to revisit it. This time, everything clicked. Out of 16 tracks, only a few had moments that felt slightly less impactful to me. Every other song was incredible. I had been meaning to get into JID for a while, and this album sealed the deal. It was the perfect mix of intricate lyricism, diverse production, and raw emotion. My favorite moment on the album is on the track "2007", where JID describes everything leaving up to his rap career, talking about everything from his lost football scholarship, J Cole's influence in his career, a fight that he got into in high school, and so much more. It's a perfect storytelling rap song, and I feel like I hear a new detail every listen.

Afterward, I dove into his discography, exploring his previous albums: DiCaprio 2 (2018) and The Never Story (2017). I enjoyed both equally, and I think they’re good listens for anyone who appreciates rap. Standout tracks from these projects include "Underwear," "Hot Box," and "Somebody." JID's consistency and versatility across his albums prove that he’s not just one of the best in his generation; he’s genuinely in a league of his own.
